LabelWriter 450 official driver route
Open DYMO’s official Driver & Software Downloads page. The current DYMO Connect listing explicitly includes the 450 series. Choose Windows or Mac and the CPU architecture for your computer; read the selected package conditions before installation.

The historical US product sheet identifies LabelWriter 450 as item 1752264. It is a direct thermal label printer with a USB connection. Ink, toner and a ribbon are not its consumables. The shared manual also covers 450 Turbo, Twin Turbo, Duo, 4XL and SE450; their extra rolls, tape printer, wider media and serial connector do not belong to the ordinary 450.
The exact 450 column specifies 300dpi, maximum print width 56mm and maximum media width 62mm (printed p.15 / PDF p.20). Print width and roll width are different. Do not select a 4XL layout just because it appears in the shared guide. The 450 diagram has a front form-feed button/status light, a reverse-label button and a label-release lever. Identify each before following a step.
Choose the software for your OS and CPU
| Purpose | Current listing | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Current Windows software | DYMO Connect v1.6.3 · Windows 10 or higher | The visible CPU choices are Intel 64-bit (x64), Intel 32-bit (x86) and ARM64. Match your system and the selected package. |
| Current Mac software | DYMO Connect v1.6.3 · macOS 14 or higher | The visible choices are Apple Silicon (ARM) and Intel 64-bit (x64). Do not interchange the packages. |
| Legacy Windows software | DYMO Label Software v8.7.4 · Windows 7–11 | The legacy section says LabelWriter 4-series and older. This row does not establish legacy ARM support. |
| Legacy Mac software | DYMO Label Software v8.7.5 · macOS 10.14–13 | Listed range: Mojave through Ventura. Do not carry that range forward to macOS 14 or later. |
The current page lists the 450 series; an architecture selector is not a test of your individual printer or application. The old product sheet/manual mentions XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.4; use today’s package requirements when choosing software. No current Linux package was verified in this check.
Install and test one label
- Record the exact model and your OS/CPU, then select one suitable official package above. The manual says the printer driver is installed with DYMO software.
- Follow that package’s installation and USB connection prompts. Confirm the actual 450 queue, not an old duplicate or a different DYMO model.
- Load the correct label and choose the matching label size/layout. Print one small test in DYMO software before testing another application.
- If the printer’s self-test works but software fails, use common PC checks: cable ends, selected queue, pause/offline status and the failed job. Do not reinstall repeatedly before recording the result.
Run and stop the 450 self-test
With the printer powered and a roll loaded, hold the front form-feed button for 5–10 seconds. Once it starts printing vertical lines across the label width, release the button. The pattern changes every 19mm. Press and release form-feed once to stop the test (printed p.12 / PDF p.17).
This is a press while already powered, not a guessed power-on button combination. Stop after enough output to assess the pattern rather than using the whole roll. A bad device test directs attention to labels, loading, contamination or the printer before the PC driver.
Three ordinary-450 blue-light states
| Light | Meaning / check | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Solid blue | Powered and ready; this alone does not prove the PC queue is connected. | Check |
| Dim blue | Power-saving mode. This manual does not assign a five-minute timeout here. | Check |
| Flashing blue | Improperly loaded labels or an empty roll; inspect loading and supply first. | Check |
Eight symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Next check | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| No light / no device test | Check power connections and the specified supply, then loading. Persistent device failure needs support. | Device test |
| Blue flashing / labels do not feed | Check remaining labels, roll fit, left-edge alignment and label detection. | Label loading |
| Label stuck in the outlet | Use the exact release-lever procedure; do not force the head or insert tools. | Clear a jam |
| Vertical test keeps printing | It may still be in self-test. Press and release form-feed once to stop it. | Stop self-test |
| Blank, faint or dotted output | Compare a fresh suitable DYMO roll; inspect label-path contamination before software. | Print quality |
| Self-test works, PC print fails | Common PC checks: USB cable, actual queue and installed DYMO printer driver. | Same-model driver |
| DYMO test works, another app fails | Common application checks: selected printer, label size, orientation and print area. | Application layout |
| Searching for a network / serial port | The ordinary 450 host connection is USB; the shared SE450 serial instructions are different. | USB / queue |
Fit the roll with no spool gap
Feed labels from underneath the roll. Push the spool guide firmly against it with no gap, and align the label’s left edge against the left side of the feed slot regardless of label width. Move the label guide to the right edge without pinching it. If the first label is only partial, use form-feed to eject that partial label (printed p.6 / PDF p.11).
For a feed or quality comparison the manufacturer recommends DYMO-branded thermal labels. Its manual says some third-party perforation holes are not detected and coatings differ. This is not a claim that all third-party rolls work, or that the 450 uses the 550’s label authentication system.
Use the label-release lever
Tear off labels already fed through, move the label-release lever forward and pull the jammed label out of the feed slot as shown in the exact manual (printed p.12). Keep fingers clear of the tear bar. If it does not free normally, stop and seek service; do not copy a disassembly procedure from another model.
Compare labels and clean carefully
Try a fresh roll if output has white dots, broken characters or light/dark patches. For exterior and roll-compartment dust, disconnect power and use a soft dry lint-free cloth and small soft brush. Reconnect only when using the LabelWriter cleaning card, following its package instructions, then reload. The manual’s safety page excludes alcohol/organic solvents while its maintenance page lists some cleaners. This guide does not prescribe those conflicting solvent recipes; use the dry method and specified card or ask DYMO.
USB and the selected queue
Check both ends of the real USB cable and select the queue belonging to the attached LabelWriter 450. Common PC checks include pause/offline status and held jobs; record the failed job before clearing it. The manual’s old Printers and Faxes / Advanced dialog sequence is historical, not a Windows 11 menu recipe. The direct thermal device test is useful even when the computer is unavailable.
Match the label layout
If DYMO software prints correctly, compare the other application’s selected printer, physical label size, orientation and margins. Printed p.3 notes that label pages are smaller than ordinary printer pages. Match the 56mm print area and loaded stock rather than assuming an A4 page or the wider 4XL. Use one short label to retest.
Official evidence and limits
Checked 2026-10-12. DYMO’s user-guide selector was set to LabelWriter 450 → User Guide → English and mapped the 22-page shared manual marked Revised 8/21. Page references above use printed numbers and give PDF numbers where useful. Current software listing and historical product identity are separate evidence. No numeric fault codes were invented, installers/firmware were not downloaded or run, and no hardware installation test is claimed.
