APD 6The US Windows 11 list shows Advanced Printer Driver 6 v6.12, APD_612_T20IV_WM.exe, 29.2 MB. It provides Windows printing and POS controls.
Virtual PortTM Virtual Port Driver v8.70f, TMVirtualPortDriver870f.exe, 17.1 MB, exposes USB/LAN printers to POS software through a virtual serial/parallel port; its role differs from APD.
UtilityTM-T20IV Utility v1.10, TM-T20IVUtility110.exe, checks and changes printer settings. It is distinct from firmware and the ordinary print driver.

These are listed versions in the checked US Windows 11 view. Labels and filenames do not establish installed compatibility or CPU support. Manual p.70 describes Mac/Linux CUPS roles; check current regional OS/CPU/file requirements separately.

Distinguish TM-T20III and inspect fitted ports

ItemCheck / action
USB / SerialThis configuration has USB and RS-232 serial. Check the nameplate and actual rear ports; Ethernet is not fitted to every unit.
USB / Ethernet / SerialThis configuration adds wired LAN. USB-B is for the host, Ethernet for LAN and DK for a cash drawer/optional buzzer. Do not attach a telephone line to DK.
USB-A / Wi-FiUSB-A is only for the optional wireless LAN unit. The manual lists OT-WL06; USB-A is neither the PC printing port nor proof that wireless hardware is already fitted.

Manual p.12 · Manual p.15

For replacement, p.84 explicitly allows operating TM-T20IV with a TM-T20III driver. Record the working POS configuration and compare real jobs, cutter and logos. This does not approve every OS/CPU/application combination.

Manual p.84

USB connection and installation order

Manual p.31 directs installing the driver before host connection. Attach the USB-B data cable, secure it with the hook, start the host and then switch the printer on. Use the specified external power arrangement and avoid cable strain.

Manual p.31

Three-step FEED self test

  1. Load suitable roll paper and close the roll cover.
  2. Hold FEED while switching on, keeping it pressed until printing starts. Status information and a continuation prompt print.
  3. After the continuation prompt, briefly press FEED for less than one second. The character pattern prints, followed by completed and a return to standard mode. Distinguish this from a long press for mode selection.

The continuation LED description differs between prose on p.54 and the table on p.19. Use the printed continuation prompt and brief press above. A device self test does not pass through the computer/POS application.

Manual p.54 · Manual p.19

Load the roll: orientation and core

  1. While not printing, open the roll cover and remove the spent core. Avoid the cutter blade.
  2. Insert specified thermal paper in the orientation illustrated on p.77. Do not use a roll whose end is pasted to its core.
  3. Pull some paper out and close the cover. As common checks, compare thermal stock/orientation for blank receipts and roll alignment/width for skew.

Manual p.77 · Manual p.78

Six selected LED and error groups

ItemCheck / action
Power onlyPower on with Error/Paper off is the Online row; it does not prove that a host/POS job succeeded.
All three at startupAll three lights may indicate initialization. Distinguish a brief startup from persistent paper-end status.
No paperThis row also has all three lights on. Inspect the actual roll and stopped job, then replace the roll.
Cover open while idlePower/Error are on; Paper depends on detection. Check the cover and actual stock.
Temperature recoveryHead/motor overheating shows Error on and recovers after cooling/time. A steady Error light alone does not identify a cutter fault.
Network link downBefore firmware 30.11 ESC/POS, Error may flash for a lost network link; from 30.11 it does not. This is a firmware boundary, not a numeric error code.

Compare the full status table and actual operation. Switch off immediately for an unrecoverable error and seek qualified service if it persists after restarting. Every Error flash is not the same unrecoverable fault.

58 mm width warning and part-specific care

Changing 80 to 58 mm requires the fitted guide and software width setting. After use at 58 mm, the manual prohibits returning to 80 mm because of head/cutter wear. An application paper-size change alone is not permission to remove the guide and revert.

Manual p.44

Switch off and unplug AC before cleaning. For the cooled head use an ethanol/IPA-moistened swab; for the platen use water and let it dry fully before power-on. Use a dry/damp cloth on the case, avoiding alcohol/benzine/thinner. The head’s general recommended interval is about three months; do not extend its alcohol method to the platen.

Manual p.81

Locked roll cover: restore the triangle mark

  1. Switch the printer off. Let the head area cool and avoid touching it.
  2. Slide the cutter cover toward the front. Do not force the locked roll cover.
  3. Follow the engraving behind the cutter cover and p.80 diagram: turn the knob until a triangle appears in the opening. Do not invent a direction or turn count.
  4. Close the cutter cover.
  5. Open the roll cover and remove the jammed paper without force. Seek qualified service if it remains locked or the fault recurs.
