Identify the continuous-form S828

S828 is an 18-pin serial dot-matrix printer with 136 columns at 10cpi and a FRONT1 push tractor. This guide applies the shared S828/S828+ manual to S828; do not substitute P8000 line-matrix or S809 resources.

Distinguish Windows files and S828 Linux

ItemCheck
WindowsThe official Serial Dot Matrix Printers → S809/S828 section lists separate 32/64-bit files for Windows 8, 10 and Server 2008. Match the actual OS/bitness and select S828 in setup.
LinuxChoose S828 Linux Driver in that section; the adjacent S809 Linux Driver is a different model. Official S828 Linux ZIP link
OS / CPU / firmwareThe listing does not establish Windows 11, ARM64 or current Linux distribution operation. ZIP contents, signatures, installation and physical printing are untested. Firmware shown by self-test identifies the device; it is not an update recommendation.

Check the fitted ports and I/F TYPE

ItemCheck
USB / IEEE1284The manual distinguishes USB from bidirectional IEEE1284 parallel. Identify the fitted connector and actual PC port.
RS-232CMatch the serial cable and host communication settings. DATA SET OFF means DSR/DCD was not sensed.
Ethernet / IPDSThe feature list marks 10/100 Ethernet as optional. S828 and S828 IPDS use different LAN modes; confirm the installed board/configuration rather than assuming LAN/IPDS on every unit.
I/F TYPEAUTO activates installed interfaces. Fixed USB, SERIAL, PARALLEL, LAN-A or LAN-I activates only that interface; changing the cable alone may not enable output.

Follow PDF25: switch off and unplug before connecting or disconnecting communication connectors.

Load FRONT1 continuous forms

  1. Use PATH to select LOAD FRONT1. When switching from optional FRONT2, first follow TEAR IF NECESS./PARK PAPER and the manual parking procedure.
  2. Open the tractor cover, release sprockets and space the guides. Fit both perforated edges onto the pins and close the sprocket covers. Some versions reverse the illustrated lock-lever direction.
  3. Check left margin and sensor alignment against PDF114. On the six-pin arrangement, paper passes under the sensor. Adjust the right sprocket to remove slack without making the paper taut.
  4. Lock both sprockets, close the tractor cover and press LOAD/FF. Leave space at the rear for the printed forms.

Use the diagrams in PDF112–115; FRONT2 is optional. The manual’s form-length mm/inch values disagree, so this guide does not combine them into a single asserted range.

Start and stop the ON LINE self-test

ItemCheck
StartLoad suitable continuous forms. Hold ON LINE while powering on; release at RELEASE KEYS. Printing begins after initialization.
ReadRecord model, firmware/FW ID, serial number and LAN-card MAC information. Character patterns repeat continuously; sample report values are not readings from your unit.
StopPress ON LINE again to stop; the printer becomes offline. A successful device test does not validate the PC driver or business application.

Compare application and queue after self-test

  1. First establish device-test and paper-path behavior; retain the report and display message.
  2. Common PC check: compare the actual port/queue, exact S828 driver and bitness. Record a working business queue before changes.
  3. Common app check: compare output language, character set, form length and margins with the configured printer. Do not copy another model’s emulation values.

Ten display-message checks

Record both the error and detail line. These selected official messages are not invented numeric codes. Correct a jam before repeatedly resetting with ON LINE.

ItemCheck
JAM FRONT1 PATH / CHECK PAPERCheck FRONT1, remove the jammed forms and use ON LINE to reset the error.
JAM FRONT2 PATH / CHECK PAPERThis identifies FRONT2. Confirm the optional path actually fitted, correct its jam and reset with ON LINE.
PAPER JAM / CHECK ALL PATHSInspect all paper paths rather than assuming one path; clear the jam before resetting with ON LINE.
INTERLOCK ERROR / CHECK INSERTIONThe manual identifies a missing rear plug cover; this is not a universal cover-open or driver error.
NO PATH AVAILABLEThe manual calls for service for an electromechanical paper-path failure.
NVM CHANGE / REMOVE PAPERFor a power-on NVM error, the manual says to power off/on and call service if it persists. Do not invent a reset procedure.
PARITY ERROR / CHARACTER LOSTThis is a serial parity-bit error. Compare host settings/handshaking; clearing the buffer can discard queued data.
DATA SET OFFSerial DSR/DCD was not sensed. Check the correct cable, then reset with ON LINE.
PRINT INTEGRITYPossible carriage obstruction caused abnormal output. The manual says not to move the platen knob and to reset with ON LINE.
UNKNOWN TRACTORThe tractor type is unrecognized; check that the installed tractor is compatible with S828.

Record ribbon/configuration and service needs

Light output or ribbon snagging can involve ribbon-guide/cartridge seating and head gap. Consult the official ribbon-replacement and cooling procedure before handling parts; persistent NO PATH AVAILABLE or abnormal initialization needs service. Observe the PRINT INTEGRITY warning not to turn the platen knob.

Checked 24 October 2026. The 140-page 260067-001B S828-AM administrator manual uses printed page numbers ten below the PDF numbers cited here. Thirteen relevant complete pages, including the cover, were visually reviewed. The current US-listed PDF matches the regional copy byte for byte.

Fitted options, physical printing, current OS compatibility and driver payloads were not tested. Other-series ribbon text on the product page does not establish S828 consumable compatibility.
