Open official Utility Driver listing

This opens SANEI’s shared download listing. Check Windows Utility Driver and the supported models against the actual host OS/CPU.

Separate the W/C models and software roles

IssueCheck / next step
WindowsThe current entry links UtilityPrinterDriver_V20124.zip (listed 91MB). The Japanese listing names Windows 7/8/10/11 and directs SM4-31W to Utility Driver. Do not substitute the SM4-31C local driver.
Linux CUPSCUPS_DRIVER_V102 and the support table map cups_SM4 to the SM4-21/SM4-31 family. The English listing excludes printer-status monitoring. This does not verify every CPU, distribution or W connection.
VCOM / SDKVirtualComDriver_Win_V107 supplies a virtual serial route. Utility Driver, wireless-setting tools and app SDKs have separate roles. An SDK listing does not establish native phone printing or AirPrint.

Listing checked 25 October 2026. Revision-history p.3 dates 2.0124 to May 2026 and a StatusLog fix. Distinguish the current ZIP from the page’s older 2.01.20 paragraph. Payload CPU support, signatures and runtime were not verified.

USB, BLE and wireless LAN are different routes

IssueCheck / next step
USBThe manual shows a USB-C port and USB-C to A cable. In USB-connected standby, holding Page Dn and Page Up together can toggle USB communication; avoid changing it accidentally during diagnosis.
Bluetooth BLEThe W model uses BLE. Distinguish it from the C model’s Bluetooth Classic/SPP route and check the actual app/SDK/host requirements. The English Android-only BLE wording and Japanese power-link feature do not establish every iOS printing route.
Wireless LANStandard on the W model; the Japanese product page also describes WLAN Direct. Distinguish the router-connecting icon from wireless communication. The short two-button IP/QR entries share a listed action, so no universal setup sequence is inferred from them.

Official English manual §3.1 / §4

80mm mobile direct-thermal receipt model

The exact model is SM4-31W: 203 dpi direct thermal, 80mm receipt stock, maximum 72mm print width, 59–85μm thickness and up to 50mm roll diameter. Paper width differs from printable width. C/21W names do not establish the same hardware.

Official product / model specification

Self print with Page Up and POWER

  1. Confirm the SM4-31W label, load thermal stock in the illustrated direction and turn the printer off. Check the remaining battery and paper first.
  2. Hold POWER while pressing Page Up. This is the Test Print row in section 3.1. No assumed duration or Page Dn startup mode is substituted.
  3. Record the device-only output. If it works while host jobs fail, common host checks include queue, port, selected model and driver. This test is separate from factory reset or battery calibration.

Official English manual §3.1

Four loading and jam-prevention checks

  1. Do not open during printing. Allow a hot head to cool, then pull the open lever up to open the paper cover. Turn power off first if there is an actual jam.
  2. Place the roll in the direction shown in section 3.2. Loose stock can cause a jam.
  3. Close the paper cover. Do not forcibly pull paper from the exit while the cover is closed.
  4. Press Page Dn. Distinguish this final loading action from ordinary Page Up feed and power-on modes.

Official English manual §1 / §3.2

SM4-31W charging and printing checks

Start with the charging LED and OLED roles documented publicly. Section 3.5 refers detailed printer status to a technical manual; no STATUS blink or numeric error code is invented here.

Three charge-light states and remaining battery

IssueCheck / next step
Green onGreen CHARGE LED means charging completed. Check the battery icon as well.
Red onRed CHARGE LED means charging. It is not, by itself, a printer error.
OffNot charging. The official example even shows 75% remaining; an off charge light does not by itself mean an empty or failed battery.

Section 3.3 starts charging by connecting the specified AC adapter and estimates about three hours from roughly 10% to full. Check the 0–40°C charging range and specified power supply. The product’s USB-C charging phrase does not establish arbitrary charger voltage/current or negotiation conditions.

Official English manual §3.3 / §4

Six selected OLED indications

IssueCheck / next step
USBIndicates USB connected; it does not prove a host job succeeded.
BLEIndicates Bluetooth connected. Check the BLE app route and actual data-transfer conditions separately.
WLAN activeWireless LAN communication indication. Also check the intended app, address and host route.
Router waitA separate icon means connecting to a wireless router. Distinguish it from active communication.
Button lockThe padlock means buttons are locked. No unlock combination is inferred from the public quick manual.
Battery lowA nearly empty battery icon means very low remaining power. Its illustrated percentage is not treated as a universal shutdown threshold.

Official English manual §3.4 / §3.5

Head care and differing roller instructions

IssueCheck / next step
HeadAfter the head cools, both English/Japanese section 3.6 specify an ethanol-moistened cotton swab for dirt on the thermal dot line. Avoid metal, sandpaper and fingers on the heating elements.
PlatenEnglish Rev1.2E specifies a dry soft cloth; Japanese Rev1.2J specifies an ethanol swab while rotating the roller. Because they differ, confirm the method for the supplied unit before applying liquid. Do not use thinner or benzene.

The quick manual recommends maintenance every six months or one million printed lines and removing dust/paper powder from the paper-empty sensor. Keep liquids out and avoid touching a hot head after printing.

Eight cause checks and this model’s driver

Clipped printDistinguish 80mm paper from the maximum 72mm printable width. Comparing application/driver layout is a common host check. Check section
USB changedCompare the USB icon and whether holding both buttons changed communication validity. Do not start with a settings reset. Check section
WLAN waitSeparate router-connecting from communication icons; compare the app and target as common host checks. Check section

Official evidence and verification scope

Checked 25 October 2026: official product/driver/manual listings, the actual English Rev1.2E and Japanese Rev1.2J single-sheet foldouts, revision history and CUPS table. The English listing’s R10E/681KB label differs from the linked R12E/Rev1.2E document; this guide uses the actual document. No installation, charging, physical print or setting-change test was performed.
