USB and fitted ports

The SLP-DX220 is the 203 dpi direct thermal model. The related SLP-DX223 is 300 dpi. Select the model shown on your printer label during setup.

The standard model has a USB Type-B port for the computer and an RS-232C serial port. Ethernet, Bluetooth and WLAN depend on the fitted option. On units with a USB Host port, use Type-B for the computer’s print cable.

Load direct thermal labels

  1. Open the cover, spread the holders and insert the roll. With either winding direction, the print surface faces up inside the printer.
  2. Set the guides to the label width and close the cover until it latches. Loading diagram
  3. When both LEDs are steady green, briefly press Feed/Cancel to check that the roll advances.

Run a self-test

Load the roll and switch the printer off. Hold Feed/Cancel while switching the printer on. Release it once the self-test starts printing. Check the settings and print quality pattern. The manual says the test is unavailable while using the label peel-off option.

If the test prints but computer jobs fail, check the port and exact model, then select the SLP-DX220 driver.

Paper lights and sensor calibration

When the upper LED 1 is steady red, check the lower LED 2.

  • Flashing orange. Check for an empty or missing roll.
  • Steady orange. The manual calls this a paper jam state. Check for a physical obstruction and make sure the printer can detect the label gap or black mark.
  • Off. Media calibration failed. Open and close the cover and check the calibration procedure for your media.
  • Flashing red. The paper cover is open. Make sure it latches shut.

If LED 1 flashes green while LED 2 stays red, printing is paused. Press Pause to resume.

When gap or black-mark calibration is needed

Start with Smart Media Detection for ordinary labels. If it misses the gap or black mark, enter configuration mode by holding Pause for about two seconds when both lights are steady green. Wait for LED 1 to stay orange. When LED 2 flashes green four times, Feed selects gap calibration. When LED 2 flashes orange four times, Feed selects black-mark calibration. If automatic calibration fails, open and close the cover and use the manual calibration instructions.
