Official files and verification scope
| Check | Evidence and next check |
|---|---|
| Windows | The official page’s structured file information lists XP970_Lite_NA.exe as a combo installer, with Windows 11/10 among its systems. An OS label alone does not certify Windows ARM printing; check the actual file’s CPU requirements. |
| Mac | The Mac combo entry XP970_Lite_64NR2_NA.dmg is separate from Windows files. Match the actual macOS; the filename’s 64 does not establish Apple Silicon support or tested installation. |
| Scan / versions | The printer’s scan-communication guidance calls for Epson Scan 2 and Event Manager. Distinguish print drivers, scanning components and firmware. After selecting the OS, check the official description for each file’s current version, size and CPU requirements. |
Windows 11 setup stalls
These installation references are linked by XP-970 support. Windows Ready Print is separate from Epson’s ReadyPrint subscription.
- If you choose the Epson driver, review the installer-stall guidance. When present, its default-selection toggle is labeled “Default install printers using Windows Ready Print.” Follow the documented change for that installation path.
- The model FAQ links to 24H2-or-later installation instructions about the separate Windows Protected Print Mode. This security mode restricts third-party drivers. Choose the printing path for the required features and PC policy; contact the administrator when policy-managed.
- Before reinstalling, check pending jobs and settings and handle only the target XP-970 queue using the official procedure. Disabling protected mode alone does not switch an existing Ready Print queue to the Epson driver. Check Location services if the installer requests it.

Match XP-970 and the paper path

| Model | This guide covers Expression Photo XP-970, US support model C11CH45201. The US product page marks it discontinued; the XP-980 replacement’s files are not substituted. |
| Photos | The product describes six-color photo printing and borderless output up to 11 × 17 inches. This is print size, distinct from the scanning area. |
| Paper path | Distinguish upper Cassette 1, lower Cassette 2 and the rear slot. The nozzle check uses plain paper in Cassette 2; rear feeding takes one sheet after the LCD prompt. |
Computer, network and storage connections
| Check | Evidence and next check |
|---|---|
| USB | Distinguish Hi-Speed USB for a computer from USB for storage/PictBridge. The manual states that USB 3.0 cables are unsupported; a computer port’s version and the required cable are separate checks. Interface reference |
| LAN / WiFi | Ethernet is 10/100BASE-T. The manual describes 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and scopes its 5 GHz notes to the US/Canada. Match the actual regional model and selected print destination. Network reference |
| Wi-Fi Direct | Direct mode connects without a wireless router. Distinguish its network and destination from the normal router connection; changing or resetting security settings is not a default fix. Direct description |
Check nozzles with Cassette 2
- Clear LCD errors and leave the CD/DVD printing tray unloaded. Put Letter/A4 plain paper in lower Cassette 2.
- Select Home → Maintenance → Print Head Nozzle Check → Print. This is the printer’s nozzle pattern, distinct from a computer test page.
- Choose O for a complete pattern, or X for missing/faint lines and follow the displayed guidance. Do not jump to repeated cleaning, firmware or resets.
If two head cleanings do not improve quality, the manual calls for turning the product off and waiting at least 6 hours before rechecking. Never power it off or open the scanner unit during a cleaning cycle. Review the separate official conditions before Power Cleaning.
Exact XP-970 nozzle-check instructions
A complete printer-generated pattern points the next comparison toward the computer, cable, software or settings. Gaps call for head checks; if the product check itself will not print and documented checks do not help, contact Epson.
Isolation check: the documented product test disconnects interface cablesUse the rear single-sheet feed
- Choose Rear Paper Feed Slot for Paper Source, start Print/Copy and wait for the LCD loading prompt. Loading early can eject a blank sheet.
- Open the rear cover and extend the support. Center just one sheet, printable side up and short edge first, then fit the guides.
- Keep the guides snug without squeezing the sheet, then select Installed when ready. The output tray extends for printing. Match the job’s size/type to the loaded sheet.

Checks for documented LCD messages
These are selected message groups. Match the actual LCD wording to the manual; no numeric error codes are invented.
| Check | Evidence and next check |
|---|---|
| Paper | For paper-size/type mismatch, compare the loaded sheet, source settings and job settings. Correct size, type and source before considering warning settings. |
| Link | Check the computer connection and power. For scanning messages, also check Epson Scan 2 and Event Manager; do not assume only the print driver is responsible. |
| Ink state | Ink is low differs from an expended-cartridge replacement message. Prepare replacements for low ink and replace the indicated cartridge when instructed. |
| Ink-pad life | A borderless-printing ink-pad service message is distinct from the maintenance box. The manual treats the pad as a service part, not user-replaceable; contact Epson. A counter reset is not offered as a fix. |
