Model and driver source
This guide is for the direct-thermal label/pos printer; mcl21ci is usb/wired lan and mcl21cwbi adds wi-fi/bluetooth. standard and lbl media variants are different; no scan/copy functionality is claimed model Star Micronics mC-Label2. The download button opens the official Star Micronics support page in this window. The manufacturer’s page is authoritative for the available driver packages and their current compatibility.
Operating-system and download checks
The Korean catalog lists these systems for checking: Current Star Windows Software Full 3.11.0 lists Windows 11 64-bit/ARM64, excluding IoT Enterprise, and names MCL21CI/MCL21CWBI. CUPS 4.13.0 lists macOS 15/14/13/12/11 and OS X 10.15/10.14. Linux CUPS 3.17.0 lists RHEL 9.5 64-bit, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 32-bit/24.04 LTS 64-bit and Chrome OS V134. Each CUPS page explicitly includes mC-Label2. JavaPOS is a separate application integration driver; its macOS 26 listing does not extend CUPS compatibility. Older Windows examples do not prove current Windows 10 support.. Select your exact operating system and version on the official page. If your version is not offered, do not install a package intended for a different system.
Connection and installation
- Read the bottom label: CI versus CWBI and Standard versus LBL. Preserve working queues and media/network settings. Standard supports linerless/continuous/die-cut labels and receipts; LBL supports die-cut labels and receipts. Set the actual media with the utility before use and after changing paper.
- For Windows USB, keep the cable disconnected, obtain the matching official Star Windows Software Full package, accept its terms, extract it and run setup/Setup.exe. Finish installation before connecting the powered printer to the PC with its USB-C data port and the supplied C-to-A cable. The USB-A peripheral port is not the PC port. Confirm the automatically created queue and print a test page.
- For Ethernet, connect to the correct LAN and read the actual IP from self-printing. In Printer Utility select the real model, choose Ethernet for either LAN or already-configured Wi-Fi, Search Network and the discovered printer; enter its actual IP if necessary. Name it, then Windows Printer Queue Management, Install Driver, Add and Test Print.
- Wi-Fi applies only to CWBI. Disconnect Ethernet because wired LAN takes priority. Star Quick Setup Utility on iOS/Android uses Start Guide (Initial Settings), Use Wireless LAN, MCL21CWBI and the real SSID/key. Grant required discovery permissions, keep the device close to the printer LED and do not power off during configuration. Require Successful and an assigned IP before creating the Windows network queue.
- For a compatible macOS/Linux release, select the corresponding official CUPS package and follow its OS software manual. JavaPOS/OPOS is for a POS application that explicitly requires it, not a substitute for the ordinary print queue. Do not promise unlisted OS/CPU support.
Troubleshooting
If USB was connected before driver installation and Windows shows StarMCL21 (STR-001) under Other Device, remove only that failed instance as the official FAQ directs, disconnect it, install the driver, reconnect and power on. If USB-C does not communicate, check the cable and Communication Only setting. Network failure needs the actual IP, LAN connection, DHCP, SSID/key and matching queue, not a blanket firewall shutdown. Standard factory settings use linerless media and hold-print control, so remove the completed label before expecting the next one. Out-of-paper can also mean incorrect BM/GAP sensor position or media settings. Close the cover, match paper/sensor settings and clean sticky parts following the manual; do not force the cutter. Head-temperature pauses recover when cooled. Persistent cutter/service errors require manufacturer service.
